“Time is precious, every day”
“What do you mean
“Life slips by in a heartbeat,”
My heart could feel the yearning
When did it happen? When did I know?
But soon I listened, soon I heard
For day to month and month to year
I used to hear the “old folks” say.
“Each moment now, make it last
For soon today will be the past.”
You dear old man?”
I said to him and then I ran.
I was too young to understand.
The old man said to me.
Yet each long day dragged slowly by
And I waited impatiently.
For each day yet to be.
Life moved slow like honey.
Every moment sweet and sunny.
Was there a moment I remember,
Like a blinding flash of light?
No, I was too busy chasing down the night.
The old man’s wise and kindly word.
Only now I truly know
What he taught me long ago.
My own words ringing in my ear.
“Careful now, make it last
For soon today will be the past.”

Heartspun memories of you
Piano keys and scraped up knees
Big blue eyes and fresh mud pies
Every day was new.
Liquid mercury in my hand
Play house, dolls and special dishes
Summer days and Christmas wishes
Memories like drifting sand.
Silver streams rushing by
Mama’s hands and cookie pans
Church on Sunday, school on Monday
I remember you and I.
Cotton candy colored days
Big girl dreams and fast machines
Heart awaking then it’s breaking
Life is full of grays.
Kaleidoscope of pain and hope
Airplane flights and marriage rites
Motherhood and Widowhood
We cope.
Weaving strands of you’s and me’s
Look in my eyes and you will see
Adventures yet to be
Still making memories.

While searching for myself one day
I came around a bend
An angel said "I'll guide your way."
She said she was my friend.
"Angels here on earth," I said.
"How strange that seems to me."
She said "If you can keep a secret,
I'll tell you how I came to be."
With wild anticipation
I sat down to hear
All the mysteries of life
Given only to my ear.
She saw the child-like wonder
Shining in my eyes
And knew what she would tell me
Would be a great surprise.
God saw you in your search for self
Alone against the wind.
" It was then He told the secret.
"Walk beside her. Be her friend."
So now it all makes sense to me
The special friends that I have known
Are angels sent direct from God
So I wouldn't be alone.

My friend once killed a snake for me.
I put her in my Hall of Fame.
She did what I was loathe to do.
So my hero she became.
My friend will jump on beds with me
And dance in grocery stores.
The laughter that she shares with me
Will make my stomach sore.
My friend once drove me through the snow
When we were in our teens.
We slipped and skidded ‘cross the ice
Into a Coke machine!
My friend once stood up tall for me
Or was it twice - or maybe three?
The world had turned against me - spinning off the track
And there we stood together - her and me - back to back.
My friend has honored me by spilling out her dreams
And trusted me with pain pulling at the seams.
Our lives are so entwined - not even death could sever.
We knew from the beginning we would be friends forever

Oh clear blue cloudless sky
Take me with you when I die
Lift me up to touch the sun
Beyond your fences let me run
Oh never ending breathless sky
Watch me know that I can fly
Forever on a summer day
And not one cloud to block my way
Oh pure and endless sun-lit sky
Reach out your arms, take me inside
I long to feel wide open space
With fields of sunshine on my face
Oh fine unfettered open sky
Swing wide your doors and let me by
To sing a song of joy and glee
My earth bound soul has been set free
