The following pictures were given to me by David Sherman, In Charge White Mountain Outpost The Salvation Army. He is in charge of the Salvation Army in Show Low, Arizona where I live and he spent 2 weeks in Clovis helping victims of the tornado. His comments regarding his experience in Clovis are below all the pictures.

Making sandwiches

The Salvation Army served (during my nine days there. We had a different unit there prior to my arrival and I don't have their stats) 5543 meals, more than 10,000 bottles of water, over 6,000 snacks. On the canteen we had 4 people from the Show Low area. Two stayed for 4 days and had to return, but two stayed for ten days, myself and Jim Stuart who is an employee of Wal Mart here and took his vacation to go serve in Clovis. (He's my very best volunteer and serves whenever he is needed). We had two volunteers from Clovis who were instrumental in helping us feed everyone. Betty Lucero and John Williams (I think that's his last name). Plus Dick Ross from the Baptist church organized all the baptist churches in the area to be a network of drivers to deliver the meals in the areas that were affected to the people who needed them so that they wouldn't have to drive in each day to eat.

The following busnisses contributed meals to the cause at varying stages of the disaster.
Furrs Cafeteria- Coupons for 2111 meals
Albertsons - much stuff
YCC Construction
KFC
Taco Box
Cargil/Excel
Taco Villa
Cannon AFB
Foxy's
Sonic
Weinerschnitzel
Kripple Creek
McDonalds & Red Lobster
IHOP
Twin Cronnies
Clovis Food Bank

One of the most spectacular persons I met there was Rhonda Bargman, owner of the Thrifty Nickel newspaper. Whenever I needed ANYTHING she got it. She put in many hours above and beyond the call (including helping prepare meals) to aid her fellow citizens. I tried to talk her and her husband Bill into moving to Show Low, but I'm afraid they're in love with Clovis. He is the manager at Albertson's and was also a great help during our time there.

Bobbie, your home town folks just impressed me to no end. I was changed by this experience. I must say that I was deeply touched and impressed with both the quality and compassion of the people of Clovis.
It was an honor to serve there.

In the sincere love of Christ,

And every common bush afire with God
But only those who see it take off their shoes
The rest sit round about it and eat blackberries

*My Dad's lady friend, has a brother, who was sucked out of the trailer he was in and then the trailer was slammed down on top of him. He is 90 and in intensive care in Lubbock. He has both wrists broken (compound) chest crushed, many ribs broken, one leg broken in 15 places, concussion with brain damage, his body is covered with bad bruises.

Many of these people were poor people who lived in trailer houses and little ramble shack houses with yards piled with junk; they had almost nothing before and now misery. I feel so badly for them.

We were down there yesterday and the National Guard is helping clean up and deter looters and the Salvation Army and Red Cross are there feeding and clothing folks and providing tooth brushes and soap and the Cook's Truck Stop is providing showers free.

It is heartbreaking the misery we saw yesterday.

One of my good friends who lived several miles south of Clovis had lost 85% of their place and it is a mess. They had family living there on their place and they lost 3 trailer houses and one of them they haven't been able to find as of yesterday morning. I didn't speak to them yesterday. They are staying with his sister here in town at this time.

They had to shoot over 100 milk cows at one dairy and just after the storm, many of then were dragging legs and some were dragging intestines around on the ground from debris slamming into them. One pregnant cow was sliced open by a piece of tin and was dragging her dead calf around. They have moved about 2,500 of them and are feeding and watering them and milking them but having to pour out the milk because of no refrigerated tanks to keep the milk in........... they are pouring out over 10,000 gallons a day.

There are dogs and cats everywhere and they have been rounding them up and feeding them. They have set up emergency animal shelters to care for them. It is sad, sad, sad.

A bright spot, the fire, police, emergency workers, city workers had responded beautifully and done a marvelous job Clean-up is underway and much has been cleared from the streets and they are almost all passable now and much has been done in yards to clean-up and they have suspended dumping fees at the dumpgrounds for now.

What a nightmare. It could have been much much worse if not for the warning sirens and the TV stations from Amarillo broadcasting the immediate onslaught of the toronados. They have now determined there were 13 here and at least 3 more in Portales and Logan.

It will be years before things are back to normal for everyone involved in this tragedy.

The Lord truly was looking out for many of us and spared us.

Bobbie, we didn't take a hit. Two blocks over from us looks like a war zone. We didn't even get any branches, leaves or anything like that on the ground.

We got rain, some small hail and not even that much wind. You'd think getting that close we'd at least get the wind but we didn't. It just hit so random that it was just crazy.

I think if anyone wants to do anything, they need to contact the Salvation Army and make money donations. FEMA came in today so maybe they can get something going. We've got a lot of people from other communities in here helping. National Guard, Fire Dept., Police, the base is really helping out.

There was one woman that lived out on South Prince that was hit in the head by flying debris. They took her to Lubbock but she died this morning. She was elderly and I don't know what hit her but they said it was head trauma.

We really were very fortunate as much damage as it's done. There were several treated at the hospital for minor injuries but other than that, we haven't had any bad injuries or deaths. Thank God for that.

The cleanup has been going really well. There's a lot of mess and a lot of damage but people pick up the pieces and move forward. That's all you can do. That's the nice thing about small communities. They all pitch in and get the job done.

Our electricity went off about 6:15 and didn't come back on untill 11:30. I was surprised they got all that up and running so quick. South Prince is still out of electricity and don't know when they'll get that fixed. They've sure got a lot of crews in here and working really hard.

Love to all,
Linda Trull

Thanks, Bobbie, but the RED CROSS and the SALVATION ARMY are doing an admirable job, they really are. FEMA got here yesterday and they are surveying the situation to determine who gets what and how much. Churches and civic organization, VFW, ELKS
and LIONS and ROTARY and many others are pitching in.

The Cannon Air Force Base shut down yesterday and they all came to town and helped with clean-up and whatever they could. They brought power saws and air hammers and front end loaders and dump trucks and.........well you just oughta see everyone pitching in. I am sure that the RED CROSS and SALVATION ARMY could use financial donations and if you want, I will be happy to get addresses for them.

I was just down to both places this morning taking checks and work gloves and cleanup towels and all kinds of clothes that people have left at my laundromat.

You'd be proud of your old hometown and how they are pulling together.

The N M Natl. Guard is even here helping.

Mickey

It has been wonderful seeing all the volunteers and people wanting to help. Cannon AFB sends hundreds of airmen and women each day into town to volunteer. It is really such a sad feeling with me when my life just goes on as usual and so many are just wiped out. I mow my yard - they pick up their house.....
